Synopsis[]
Different to its ARX-01b LMP2 counterpart, the ARX-02a is based on a new chassis with 50/50 weight distribution that was developed by Honda Performance Design (HPD) and Wirth Research. The Acura designed 3.4 litre V8 engine from the ARX-01b was enlarged to 4 litres for LMP1 application, resulting in 625 hp (466 kW) and 375 ft·lb (508 N·m) of torque.[1] The project was cancelled before the car's first race in January 2009 by Honda North America president Tetsuo Iwamura, meaning that development ceased before the car even completed one in-race lap[2]
The #66 car competed in the 2009 season of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), driven by Gil de Ferran, Simon Pagenaud and Scott Dixon (12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans only). It won 5 races over the course of the season, but was beaten to the title by its compatriot from the Highcroft Racing team.[3] The Jim Hall Tribute livery (which payed tribute to Chaparral and one of its founders, Jim Hall[4]) was worn by the car in the last race of the season at Laguna Seca, which it won from pole.
