The 2002 Audi #1 Infineon R8 is an LMP900/LMP1 sports prototype by Audi.

It appears in Forza Motorsport (2005) and Forza Motorsport 2.

Synopsis[]

The R8, one of the most dominant endurance racers ever, is a redevelopment of the R8R that Audi competed at the 1999 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A co-development between Audi Motorsport, Joest Racing, and Dallara, the R8 features a similar open cockpit design and the same 3.6L twin-turbocharged V8 from its predecessor, putting out 610 hp (455 kW) and 516 ft·lb (700 N·m). The car would make its debut at the 2000 12 Hours of Sebring, but would then go back to Europe for more testing in preparation for Le Mans, leaving the R8R to compete in its place. The car would compete in both the LMP900 and LMP1 classes until 2005 across a variety of endurance series, winning at least one series every single year it competed. It would then serve a similar role to the R8R during 2006, where it stood in for its successor, the R10 TDI, while that car prepped for Le Mans.[1]

The #1 competed in both the 2002 ALMS season (under Audi Sport North America) and the 2002 edition of Le Mans (under Audi Sport Team Joest). In the ALMS, the car would be driven mainly by Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela, with Tom Kristensen joining them for the season opening 12 Hours of Sebring, and Rinaldo Capello joining for the next race at Sonoma. The car, along with its sister car, the #2, would dominate the season, with the #1 taking 3 wins and the #2 taking 5 wins, allowing Audi to cruise to its 3rd straight teams' championship.[2]

Pirro, Biela, and Kristensen would be the team to drive the car at Le Mans. The trio would end up winning Le Mans for the 3rd year in a row, with two other R8s completing a sweep of the podium for Audi for the second time in 3 years (and a 3rd straight 1-2).[3]

The #1 and #5 are currently stored at Audi Tradition, a storage facility near Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.[4]
