The 2014 Audi #45 Flying Lizard Motorsports R8 LMS ultra - abbreviated as "#45 Audi R8 LMS" - is a GT3 race car by Audi.
It appears in Forza Motorsport 6, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex, Forza Horizon 3 as part of the Motorsport All-Stars Car Pack, and Forza Motorsport 7 as a Showcase reward.
Synopsis[]
An evolution of the Audi R8 LMS, the R8 LMS ultra made its debut in 2012.[1] While the car has the exact same engine specs as the non-ultra version, the car has access to more torque at lower engine speeds thanks to a new exhaust system. The chassis and aerodynamic profile of the car have also been improved to help the car cut through the air easier.[2] The car would take part in a variety of racing series up until 2016, when it would be mostly replaced by the new R8 LMS GT3 that was based on the second generation R8 that had been introduced a year prior. However, some cars would continue racing in different GT series up until 2023.
The #45 took part in the inaugural season of the United (now IMSA) SportsCar Championship (USCC) in 2014 as a part of the GT Daytona (GTD) class. The car would be driven by Nelson Canache Jr. and Spencer Pumpelly for the entirety of the season, with a slew of other drivers joining for other races throughout the season. The car would get off to a great start at the season opening 24 Hours of Daytona, with Canache Jr., Pumpelly, Markus Winkelhock, and Tim Pappas almost getting the win in class on debut, but were beat to the line by less than 1 second by a Ferrari 458 Italia GT3. The sister car, the #35, would finish a lap behind the #45 in 5th.[3]
At the next race at the 12 Hours of Sebring however, the #45 would finish 8th, while the #35 would once again finish in 5th. A third consecutive 5th place finish would follow for the #35 at Laguna Seca, while the #45 would follow just behind in 6th. The two cars would never be able to match their season opening success, with their next best finishes the rest of the season being two 7th place finishes each. The #45 car would end up finishing 10th overall in the teams' championship, while the #35 would finish just ahead of it in 9th.[4]
The #45 would be the only car to return for the 2015 season, with the Flying Lizard team deciding to run only a partial schedule due to commitments in other racing series.[5] The car would compete in the first three and last two races of the season, with the car hosting a rotating door of drivers. The best result for the car would be a 5th place finish at the shortened season finale at Petit Le Mans, with Robert Thorne, Colin Thompson, and Guy Cosmo at the wheel. The car would end up finishing 13th in the teams' championship even without receiving points for the first two races of the season due to not completing enough laps.[6]
