"With Audi’s record in LMP racing, it seems incredible that they’re able to continue to out-do themselves, but the R15 TDI is a perfect example of just that. Replacing the dominant R10 TDI, with its V12 engine, the R15 TDI utilizes a V10 of the same displacement but of physically smaller dimensions to the older car. Thanks in part to the powerful and lightweight new engine, the car is more efficient (and incidentally, produces less pollutants), while a new engine management system improves throttle response. The bodywork is also much different, with the central protruding nose of a lower, wider shape. Flanking the nose are the first LED headlights found in a Le Mans prototype. While Audi failed to compete with the Peugeots at Le Mans, it is perhaps more to the credit of the stiff Peugeot competition than to the detriment of the R15, which is a highly competent and incredibly quick car. Nonetheless, the R15 would be updated in 2010 to attempt to take on the new threat from a resurgent Peugeot."

The 2009 Audi R15 TDI is an LMP1 race car by Audi.

It appears in Forza Motorsport 3 as part of the Hot Holidays Car Pack and in Forza Motorsport 4.

Variants[]

The Audi R15 TDI appears in two livery variants.

  • 2009 Audi #2 Audi Sport Team Joest R15 TDI (Both titles)
  • 2009 Audi Forza Ultimate R15 TDI (Forza Motorsport 3 only)

Synopsis[]

An evolution rather than a revolution like its predecessor, the Audi R10 TDI, the R15 TDI was Audi's attempt to make that very successful car even better. While the car still uses a diesel engine, the number of cylinders has been reduced by 2 to improve efficiency and give the car a better weight balance and agility. Just like its predecessor V12, the V10 engine is 5.5L and is also twin turbocharged. [2]

The #2 car was one of the main two cars for the R15's debut year in 2009. The #2 car's first race would be the 12 Hours of Sebring. Driven by Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello, and Tom Kristensen, the car would continue the success of its predecessors, taking the win at the event, while also setting a new distance record. Its sister car, the #1, piloted by an all-German team of Mike Rockenfeller, Lucas Luhr, and Marco Werner, would also end up on the podium, finishing in 3rd place. [3]

The two cars would make their next appearance at that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, but with their teams being swapped. The two cars would also be joined by a third entry, the #3. The all-German team now driving the #2 would qualify the car in 6th, only being beaten by the #1 car, which qualified 2nd, with the other four spots being taken up by Peugeot 908s. The #2 would unfortunately have the worst race of the three as Luhr went off track entering the Porsche Curves on lap 104, spinning into the tire wall. The car attempted to limp back to the pits but was deemed too damaged by the stewards to continue. Meanwhile, the #1 would have the best race of the three, but would only manage to finish 3rd, being beat by two of the Peugeots. This would be the first time an Audi-derived car didn't win at Le Mans since 1999.[4]

The final race for the #1 and #2 would be Petit Le Mans, with the two teams being swapped back, however with only two drivers driving, with Kristensen and Rockenfeller not competing. The result of the race would unfortunately be similar to Le Mans, with Peugeot taking the top two spots and the two Audis finishing 3rd and 4th, with the #2 being the team on the podium.[5]

For 2010, due to the losses at both regular and Petit Le Mans, Audi decided that the R15 needed an update in order to take back the top step of the podium. Thus, they created the R15 TDI Plus, which had its front end redesigned and lowered to reduce drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency.[2] At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the cars were all outqualified by the Peugeots, but the Audis would manage to avenge their loss the previous year by outlasting the Peugeots, who all retired due to mechanical failures, while also sweeping the podium in the process.[6] However, they would once again lose out on a Petit Le Mans win due to a Peugeot 1-2 for the second year in a row.[7]

The final swansong for this iteration came in the form of the R15++ TDI, which only competed at one event, the 2011 12 Hours of Sebring, due to its successor, the R18, not being ready to race.[8]
