Austin is a British car manufacturer featured in Forza Horizon 4.

Synopsis[]

The Austin Motor Company was started by Herbert Austin in 1905 with the backing of steel magnate Frank Kayser. Their first cars were marketed as luxury vehicles, with their published customer lists including various figures of power and nobility.[1]

Austin would have success in the car business throughout the 1930s and 1940s; they also built aircraft to help with the war effort. Austin was merged with Morris Motors Limited, forming the British Motor Corporation in 1952; this ultimately dissolved the company, but not the marque itself. Austin also settled on an agreement with the Donald Healey Motor Company in 1952, leading to Austin-Healey, a brand which would last some twenty years. With the BMC, Austin was made the dominant partner, with its engines being used for most cars and eventually Austins and Morrises became badge-engineered versions of each other.

The company became a part of the British Leyland motoring conglomerate in 1968 under intense government pressure; by the end of the 1970s however, the future of Austin (and the whole of British Leyland) was looking bleak, with poor sales not helped by the woeful cars they were producing. A plan to take Rover upmarket led to the demise of the Austin brand in 1987, with the last car to bear the Austin name, the Montego, being rebranded as a Rover that year.

Since the brand's demise, the naming rights have been passed on to a number of different companies, particularly BMW, British Aerospace and finally MG Rover; when MG Rover collapsed, the rights passed on to Nanjing Automobile (Group) Corporation. The company claimed they may use the Austin name on certain MG Rover models but nothing ultimately came of it. The rights to the name were then bought by John Stubbs of Essex in 2015, who aims to take the company back into the mainstream market.
