The 2001 BMW #6 Prototype Technology Group M3 GTR is a GT race car by BMW.
It appears in Forza Motorsport 3 and Forza Motorsport 4.
Synopsis[]
Based on the E46 generation of the BMW M3, the M3 GTR was developed as an evolution of the original GT racing variant of the car that competed in the GT class of the 2000 American Le Mans Series (ALMS). While that car would finish 3rd in the championship, the inline 6 in the car was seen as uncompetitive compared to the flat 6 in the Porsche 911 GT3. Thus, it was decided that a more powerful engine was needed for the car, leading to the development of the P60 V8. The car would make its debut at the 2001 12 Hours of Sebring.[1]
The #6 and its sister car, the #10, would compete in a majority of the 2001 ALMS series, with the former driven by Boris Said (except for Laguna Seca where he would swap with Niclas Jönsson) and Hans-Joachim Stuck, with Bill Auberlen joining the duo for the season finale at Petit Le Mans. While the BMW Motorsport GTRs would make their debut at Sebring, the PTG cars would not make their debut until Sonoma after the European leg of the championship. The #6 would end up being the better performing of the two cars, being the only car of the two to end up on the podium, accumulating 2 wins (including Petit Le Mans) and a 2nd and 3rd place each. PTG would end up 3rd in the team's championship, while the BMW Motorsport team would win the championship, thanks to 5 wins, with the two split by one of the Porsche racing teams. While 911s had won the first 3 races of the season, the final 7 would be won by a GTR.[2]
To comply with new Le Mans and ALMS homologation rules which had come about due to complaints about the GTR being more of a prototype then a production model, a road-going version of the car was developed. Initially only 10 models were to be made, but when the rules wee changed again, now requiring 100 models and 1,000 engines to be made in order to not accrue any penalties, BMW decided that it wasn't worth it to continue racing the car in the ALMS. Thus, they decided to pull out of the 2002 ALMS championship before it began.[1]
