"The raciest version of BMW’s executive sedan has a little secret: push the programmable button labeled “M” on the steering wheel and unleash the full fury of the M5’s exclusive new V10 engine. One hundred extra horsepower come tumbling out, the redline skyrockets to more than 8,000 RPM, and a heads-up display appears on the windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road rapidly diminishing under the deep front air dam. The transition from sports-luxury to Nürburgring-conquering monster is as seamless as it is profound. The M5 has enough programmable settings for the active suspension and electronic driver’s aids to keep every teenage computer geek on your block busy for a week, but what really matters is the ability of the big M5 to hustle from point A to point B faster than nearly anything in its class (and a few cars higher up on the food chain). It’s another engineering triumph from BMW Motorsport, and one that really needs to be belted around any of Forza’s exciting tracks, like Germany’s formidable Nordschleife circuit, to fully appreciate."—Official description[1]
The 2009 BMW M5 - also referred to as the "BMW M5 E60" and abbreviated as "BMW E60 M5"[2] or "BMW M5 '09" - is a rear-wheel drive sports saloon by BMW.
It is featured in Forza Motorsport 3, Forza Motorsport 4, as well as in Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4.
Synopsis[]
Produced between 2005 and 2010, the E60 M5 is the successor to the E39 M5 produced between 1998 and 2003 and was succeeded by the F10 M5.
Introduced in 2005, the E60 M5 is notable for being the world's first production sedan with a V10 engine, particularly a 5.0L odd firing S85 V10. As with some of the E60 M5's predecessors, the E60 M5 was both the quickest and fastest four-door sedan at the time of its release, with 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.1 seconds and a top speed above 200 mph (322 km/h).
Other unique features from the E60 M5 include a wider track, unique body panels, and a colored HUD with navigation. The larger, flared front guards on either side also feature cooling vents, reminiscent of the 1970s BMW CSL. The wheels are of a standard 19 inch diameter with two pairs of dual exhaust pipes at the rear.
Drivetrain[]
The S85 codenamed V10 produces 500 hp (373 kW) and 383 ft·lb (520 N·m) and was designed from scratch for this M5. Driving the rear wheels is a Getrag SMG III seven-speed single-clutch semi-automatic transmission with gear shifts done in 65 milliseconds. This particular transmission was also developed for the E63/64 M6.

Trivia[]
- The 5.0L V10 engine swap available for various BMWs in Forza Motorsport 4 and in the Horizon series originates from this car.
- In Forza Motorsport 7, it featured a bug where the undercarriage would appear as floating apart from the car in some instances. This was fixed in the February 15, 2018 update.
