The 2003 BMW Motorsport #42 M3-GTR is a GT race car by BMW.

It appears in Forza Motorsport (2005).

Synopsis[]

Based on the E46 generation of the BMW M3, the M3 GTR was developed as an evolution of the original GT racing variant of the car that competed in the GT class of the 2000 American Le Mans Series (ALMS). While that car would finish 3rd in the championship, the inline 6 in the car was seen as uncompetitive compared to the flat 6 in the Porsche 911 GT3. Thus, it was decided that a more powerful engine was needed for the car, leading to the development of the P60 V8. The car would make its debut at the 2001 12 Hours of Sebring.[1]

After a year off from major races and championships, the GTR would make its return at the 2003 edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in the E1 class with the #42 (driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck, Boris Said, Marc Duez, and John Nielsen) and the #43 (driven by Jörg and Dirk Müller, Duez, and Claudia Hürtgen). The cars would perform well in qualifying, with the #42 qualifying 5th overall and 2nd in class, while the #43 would qualify 7th overall and 4th in class, both being beaten by Opel Astra V8s. The race would be a different story however, with both cars eventually crashing out.[2]

The cars would return for the next edition of the race in 2004, with slightly revised lineups. Both Müllers would move to the #42 to join Stuck, with him and Pedro Lamy replacing Duez in doing double duty in both cars. Said would swap to the #43, with that driver lineup being rounded out by Duncan Huisman. The #42 would manage to improve its overall starting position, qualifying 4th, but would have a worse class position of 3rd. The #43 on the other hand would do worse in both regards, qualifying 10th overall and 7th in class. Both cars would end up doing much better in the race then they did the year before, achieving a 1-2 overall finish, with the #42 in 1st and the #43 in 2nd, and giving BMW their first win in the prestigious race in 6 years.[3]
