Synopsis[]

British Racing Motors, commonly known as BRM, was a British Formula One racing team competing in Formula One from 1951 to 1977. Founded in 1945 by entrepreneur Raymond Mays and associate Peter Berthon, BRM built their own chassis as well as manufactured their own engines, their first engine being an "extremely ambitious" 1.5L V16 engine used in a number of their Formula One cars.

Initially funded through a trust fund via financial backing from the British motor industry, backers withdrew due to the team's slow progress and results; ultimately, funding would largely fall to investor Sir Alfred Owen of engineering firm Rubery Owen, and for most of its history the team would compete under the formal name of Owen Racing Organisation. The team's first win came in 1959, with Jo Bonnier winning the Dutch Grand Prix that year, after a string of podiums in the preceding years.

More success came in 1962, with Graham Hill winning four races for the team, his first championship and BRM's only drivers' constructors' championships. The team's last win came at the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix with Jean-Pierre Beltoise. BRM's last notable performance was at the 1974 South African Grand Prix, where one of their cars would finish 2nd, also with Beltoise; following this year Owen would withdraw their support from the team and the team would run on a lower-key basis by Louis Stanley until 1977 when the team collapsed. Over its history, BRM won 18 races, achieved 65 podiums and 11 pole positions.
