"Jack Brabham is the only man ever to win a Formula One championship driving a car carrying his own name. His is one of the most famous names in racing and, in the 1960s, Brabham was the largest manufacturer of customer racing cars. After Jack Brabham won the Formula One championship in 1959 and 1960 in Cooper-Climax race cars, he established the Brabham marque with Ron Tauranac. Brabham is largely considered the purveyor of the rear- or mid-engine race car. In Brabham’s terms that era was a “rear-engine revolution.” The season following Brabham’s 1966 Formula One championship in a BT19, BT24s were driven by Brabham and teammate Denny Hulme. Competing marques like Ferrari and Lotus had been playing catch-up, but their own progressions were coming along and the days of the Brabham’s dominance seemed numbered. But not yet; it would be the reliability and nimbleness of the Repco powered BT24 that would prevail. The Repco V8 powering the BT24 was derived from an all-aluminum Oldsmobile engine and displaced just under the 3.0liter limit. By the end of the 1967 race season, Hulme would win the championship and Brabham would only be a handful of points behind to take second."

Synopsis[]

The successor to the BT20, the BT24 was Brabham's main car during the 1967 Formula 1 (F1) season. Designed by Ron Tauranac, the car uses a 3.0L V8 designed completely from scratch by engine supplier Repco and continued to be the only car on the grid that used a spaceframe chassis. The engine uses exhausts that go through the center of the cylinder banks to help reduce drag and not have to worry about threading the exhausts through the car's rear suspension.[2] While the BT24 wouldn't debut in a race until the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix, with the BT20 and its predecessor, the BT19, substituted in its place, its engine would make its debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, transplanted into the BT19.[3]

Only one example of the BT24 would be used at Spa, driven by team owner Jack Brabham, while his teammate, Denny Hulme, would drive the BT19, with neither car finishing due to engine issues. This would end up being the only down point for the car, as after this point, at least one of the two cars would finish on the podium of every remaining race, with Brabham taking 2 wins and Hulme taking 1. Hulme would end up taking the drivers' championship, giving Brabham their second straight drivers' champion after Brabham had won it the year prior. Jack Brabham would end up finishing just behind his teammate in 2nd, with both helping the team also take their second straight constructors' title.[4]

For the 1968 season, the cars would be used by Brabham and his new teammate Jochen Rindt for the season opening South African Grand Prix, but then be sold to local South African teams due to the car's successor, the BT26, being ready for the next race in Spain. One of these cars would end up making one final appearance in F1 at the 1979 South African Grand Prix at the hands of Sam Tingle.

A third BT24 built in 1967 would be used in 1968 by Rindt in Spain and Monaco and then by Dan Gurney at the Dutch Grand Prix. It would then be loaned out to Kurt Ahrens Jr. for the German Grand Prix. After this, the car would be sold to Frank Williams, gaining a Cosworth engine and the BT26's rear wing for the Tasman Series. It would eventually make its way back to F1 with a newer Cosworth engine for the 1969 season, after being sold again, this time to Silvio Moser, with the car appearing in 7 races.[2]
