The 2005 Chevrolet #31 Whelen Engineering Corvette Z06 is a GT race car by Chevrolet.
It is featured in Forza Motorsport 2, and Forza Motorsport 3.
Synopsis[]
Based on the C5 generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the Corvette Z06 was built to compete in the SCCA World Challenge series. The car uses a modified version of the 5.8L engine found in the road car, with it now outputting 525 hp (391 kW). The car would make its debut at the opening round of the 1999 season at Mosport. Initially using lip spoilers and being simply called the Corvette C5, the cars would start to gain pedestal spoilers in 2001, and would be renamed the Z06 in 2002 to coincide with the reintroduction of the model name a year earlier.
The #31 made its debut during the 2005 World Challenge season, with Sonny Whelen behind the wheel. While Whelen would have only one top 10 finish of 9th to his name, due to completing in the entire season he would finish in 12th overall and would take home the rookie driver crown. For the first time, Chevrolet would finally finish ahead of another season-long competitor, just beating out Dodge for 3rd in the manufacturers' championship.[1]
2005 would be the last full season for the Z06s, as Chevrolet had introduced the next generation of the Corvette, the C6 during that year. While some teams had switched over to using a racing version of the C6 by the time of the season opening round of the 2006 season at Sebring, the #31 was one of four Z06s still on the grid. The car would end up going out on somewhat of a high note, finishing 7th and only 12 seconds behind the best placed C6 in 6th. By the time of the next round at St. Petersburg, Whelen had switched over to using a C6.[2]
