The 2003 Chevrolet #73 3R-Racing Corvette Z06 is a GT race car by Chevrolet.
It is featured in Forza Motorsport (2005), Forza Motorsport 2, and Forza Motorsport 3.
Synopsis[]
Based on the C5 generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the Corvette Z06 was built to compete in the SCCA World Challenge series. The car uses a modified version of the 5.8L engine found in the road car, with it now outputting 525 hp (391 kW). The car would make its debut at the opening round of the 1999 season at Mosport. Initially using lip spoilers and being simply called the Corvette C5, the cars would start to gain pedestal spoilers in 2001, and would be renamed the Z06 in 2002 to coincide with the reintroduction of the model name a year earlier.
The #73 would make its debut during the 2000 World Challenge season. Driven by Phil McClure, the car would have a mostly uneventful season, only finishing in the top 10 twice throughout the season. McClure would end up finishing 13th in the drivers' standings.[1] While the car would only slightly improve its results in the following season, finishing in the top 10 five times, two of these would be in the top 5 and one of these would be the car's first podium at Sears Point (known today as Sonoma). McClure would finish 8th overall, which would be the best out of all the Corvettes. Due to McClure achieving the only podium for any of the Corvette's throughout the season, Chevrolet would finish 5th, although this was lowest out of all the season long entrants.[2] 2002 would be another middling season for the car, as while it achieved another 3rd place and had two other finishes within the top 5, McClure would have a worse season, finishing 11th overall, while Chevrolet was ineligible to score points in the manufacturers' championship.[3]
McClure would start the 2003 season strong, qualifying on pole in the season opening race at Sebring and would hold this position until the end of the race, giving the #73 its first ever win. It would then follow this up with its second ever win at Mosport. The car would end up having its best season yet, only finishing outside the top 10 once, which propelled McClure to a 3rd place overall finish. However, even with a driver on the overall podium, Chevrolet would finish 4th and last of the manufacturers.[4]
The 2004 season would see the #73 move slightly back to its previous performances, as while it would not take a win during the season, it would finish on the podium 3 times, with a 2nd place and two 3rd places. This would be enough for McClure to finish 6th in the drivers' standings. Chevrolet would once again finish 4th and last of the manufacturers.[5]
2005 would be the last full season for the Z06s, as Chevrolet had introduced the next generation of the Corvette, the C6 during that year, with those taking over from the C5s staring in the 200 season, although some C5s like the #31 would continue running for at least one of the opening rounds.
