The 2003 Dodge #126 Team Zakspeed Viper GTS-R is a GT race car by Dodge.
It is featured in Forza Motorsport 2, Forza Motorsport 3 and Forza Motorsport 4.
Synopsis[]
Based on the SR II (second) generation of the Dodge Viper, the Viper GTS-R was born out of Dodge wanting to increase sales of the Viper in Europe while also showing off the improved handling capabilities of the car. While the the first (SR I) generation of the car had been run in GT races across the US and Europe, none of them had been done with factory backing. The GTS-R's chassis would be designed by Reynard Motorsport, with Oreca building and running the factory effort of the cars in Europe (with these cars being run as Chryslers). Oreca would also build the cars for the US, however the factory efforts would initially be run by the Canaska / Southwind Team (as Dodges), although Oreca would eventually take this over as well. Aside from the necessary components like a rear wing and diffuser and a front splitter, the car looks very similar to its road going counterpart. The largest difference between the two cars is the use of side exhausts, something found on both the preceding and succeeding generations of the road car, but not on the SR II generation.[1]
While the GTS-Rs were usually powered by slightly modified 8.0L V10s taken from the road car, three chassis (C15, C36, and C52) eventually had their engines modified to become 6.2L V8s in order to run the Nürburgring 24 Hours from 2005 onward. While the cars still had their V10 blocks, there was nothing in the front two cylinders. This was due to the car's dominance at the event, with the event organizers, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), putting a restriction on the size of engines at 6.2 liters and forcing manufacturers to only use the original engine block.[2]
The #126 (chassis C36) made its one and only appearance at the Spa 24 Hours in 2003, after previously only competing at the Nürburgring 24 Hours over the last few years as the #34 and #1, with it competing at Spa in the national series class, denoted as G2. Driven by Kurt Mollekens, Didier de Radiguès, and Pedro Lamy, the car would qualify 13th overall and 1st in the G2 class, although it would be beaten by 4 other Vipers in the FIA GT class. It would do much better in the race however, outlasting two of those Vipers, beating another by two laps, and finishing a lap behind the final one, eventually finishing in 5th overall while maintaining its leading position in class.[3][4]
The chassis would return to competing only at the Nürburgring 24 Hours after the race, but this time as the #66. The car would qualify 8th overall and 2nd in class in 2004, but while it would still manage to finish 3rd in class in the race, this would be in 112th place, almost 40 laps down from the winner.[5] The chassis would make one final appearance at the 2005 edition of the race alongside the #77, this time with the modified V8. Even with the change of engine, the car would manage to qualify 7th, but would retire from the race after only 70 laps.[6] The chassis would then be fully retired after this race.
