The 2002 Dodge #1 Team Zakspeed Viper GTS-R - also known as "Dodge #1 Team Zakspeed Viper ACR"[1] - is a GT race car by Dodge.

It is featured in Forza Motorsport (2005) and Forza Motorsport 2.

Synopsis[]

Based on the SR II (second) generation of the Dodge Viper, the Viper GTS-R was born out of Dodge wanting to increase sales of the Viper in Europe while also showing off the improved handling capabilities of the car. While the the first (SR I) generation of the car had been run in GT races across the US and Europe, none of them had been done with factory backing. The GTS-R's chassis would be designed by Reynard Motorsport, with Oreca building and running the factory effort of the cars in Europe (with these cars being run as Chryslers). Oreca would also build the cars for the US, however the factory efforts would initially be run by the Canaska / Southwind Team (as Dodges), although Oreca would eventually take this over as well. Aside from the necessary components like a rear wing and diffuser and a front splitter, the car looks very similar to its road going counterpart. The largest difference between the two cars is the use of side exhausts, something found on both the preceding and succeeding generations of the road car, but not on the SR II generation.[2]

While the GTS-Rs were usually powered by slightly modified 8.0L V10s taken from the road car, three chassis (C15, C36, and C52) eventually had their engines modified to become 6.2L V8s in order to run the Nürburgring 24 Hours from 2005 onward. While the cars still had their V10 blocks, there was nothing in the front two cylinders. This was due to the car's dominance at the event, with the event organizers, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), putting a restriction on the size of engines at 6.2 liters and forcing manufacturers to only use the original engine block.[3]

The #1 (chassis C36) made its debut at the 2001 edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in the A7 class, numbered as the #34. The car would have a rather uneventful debut, retiring from the race after only 61 laps. The car would return the next year, now as the #1 and in the A8 class. With Peter Zakowski, Pedro Lamy, and Robert Lechner behind the wheel, things would go much better this time, with the car qualifying on overall pole. The car would never relinquish this position, taking the overall win and giving the Vipers their third overall win at the event in 4 years.[4]

Due to the dominance of the Vipers, for the next running of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2003, the ADAC would put in a restriction for the Vipers specifically that they were only allowed to run with a 90 liter fuel tank instead of the 120 liter fuel tank allowed for other competitors. To try and counteract this restriction, the team made it so the rear of the car could be opened allowing the empty fuel tank to be pulled out and then replaced by a new already filled tank. However, after a demonstration of this system to the public before the race, the ADAC banned this system.

The team had another trick up their sleeves, as while the fuel tank restriction had been placed on a Chrysler Viper, it hadn't been imposed on a Dodge Viper. Thus, when the team actually entered the #1 car for the race in the A8 class, they entered it as a Dodge Viper with the 120 liter tank. While this work around wasn't noticed initially, with the car qualifying 4th overall and 3rd in class, the car did end up receiving two 45 minute stop-and-go penalties during the race after the deception was noticed but would still finish 5th overall and 2nd in class. However, this would all end up being for naught, as the ADAC would eventually decide to disqualify the car from the race results.[5][4]

This would end up being the last race for the C36 chassis as the #1, with it next making an appearance a month later at the Spa 24 Hours as the #28 in testing and as the #126 in the actual race.
