The 2005 Dodge #77 Team Zakspeed Viper ACR is a GT race car by Dodge.

It is featured in Forza Motorsport 2.

Synopsis[]

Based on the SR II (second) generation of the Dodge Viper, the Viper GTS-R was born out of Dodge wanting to increase sales of the Viper in Europe while also showing off the improved handling capabilities of the car. While the the first (SR I) generation of the car had been run in GT races across the US and Europe, none of them had been done with factory backing. The GTS-R's chassis would be designed by Reynard Motorsport, with Oreca building and running the factory effort of the cars in Europe (with these cars being run as Chryslers). Oreca would also build the cars for the US, however the factory efforts would initially be run by the Canaska / Southwind Team (as Dodges), although Oreca would eventually take this over as well. Aside from the necessary components like a rear wing and diffuser and a front splitter, the car looks very similar to its road going counterpart. The largest difference between the two cars is the use of side exhausts, something found on both the preceding and succeeding generations of the road car, but not on the SR II generation.[1]

While the GTS-Rs were usually powered by slightly modified 8.0L V10s taken from the road car, three chassis (C15, C36, and C52) eventually had their engines modified to become 6.2L V8s in order to run the Nürburgring 24 Hours from 2005 onward. While the cars still had their V10 blocks, there was nothing in the front two cylinders. This was due to the car's dominance at the event, with the event organizers, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), putting a restriction on the size of engines at 6.2 liters and forcing manufacturers to only use the original engine block.[2]

The #77 (chassis C15) made its debut at the 1999 edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in the A6 class, numbered as the #53. While its unknown where the car qualified, the car did end up winning the race, giving Chrysler/Dodge their first win at the event. The car would return a year later, this time as the #1, but would not be able to repeat, finishing a lap behind the winning Porsche 996 GT3-R. The car would be entered in 2001 as the #33 (alongside the #1 as the #34), this time in the A7 class. After just missing out on the win in 2000, the car would be able to repeat its 1999 performance, giving the Viper its 2nd win in three years. The car would then compete in the Euro GT Series for two years, first as the #9 in 2002 and then as the #5 in 2003, winning the championship as the #5.[3]

The car would then not make an appearance for two years before returning to the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2005, this time as the #77 and in the A8 class. Due to the previously noted restriction in engine size, the car would have its V10 replaced with the unique V8. Driven by Peter Zakowski, Robert Lechner, and Sascha Bert, the car would appear alongside the #126 (as the #66). Qualifying in 5th overall, the #77 would manage to move up a couple of places during the race to finish 3rd overall and 1st in class.[4] The car would be renumbered again, this time back to the #33, for the 2006 race and would repeat its performance from a year prior.[5] The final appearance for the chassis would be at the 2007 edition of the race as the #5, where, similar to the last race for the #126, it would retire after only 22 laps.[6]
