"The great A.J. Foyt became the first driver to ever win the Indianapolis 500 four times, driving the Ford Coyote Gilmore. As history tells it, Foyt was battling to catch race leader Gordon Johncock. At the 450 mile point, Johncock had a several second advantage, but Foyt pushed the speeds of the top two in excess of 190mph by dialing up his boost to the limit. In the new era of turbo boost limitations, Foyt had found an advantage with his quad-cam Ford V-8; at maximum boost the Coyote had more horsepower and speed than Johncock’s Offenhauser-powered car. With just fifteen laps remaining, a puff of blue smoke from Johncock’s car sent him coasting to the pit lane. Foyt and the Coyote would continue on to finish and win that treasured fourth victory at Indy. The Coyote Gilmore, with Foyt piloting it, and contributing much to the design of the quad-four V8 powering it, would be one of the first Indy cars to hit nearly 200 mph officially.
