"Is it a buggy? It is a hot rod? It doesn’t matter what you call the Rip Rod because this diminutive Hot Wheels ride is ready to shake things up on any surface. This beast is equipped with a souped-up two-cylinder [sic] motor that makes better than 100 hp. While that might not seem like much, in this rod, it is more than enough to thrill (or spill depending on your skills behind the wheel). One look at the suspension tells you this tricked out custom is ready for any terrain. This is a super lightweight tube chassis pro-built machine and it’s all Hot Wheels. In short, the Rip Rod really rips."
—Official description[1]

The 2012 Hot Wheels Rip Rod - abbreviated as Rip Rod - is a RWD stunt buggy by Hot Wheels.

It appears in Forza Horizon 3 as part of the Hot Wheels Expansion, and in Forza Motorsport 7 as part of the Hot Wheels Car Pack.

It appears in Forza Horizon 4 as seasonal reward since the Series 5 update and in Forza Horizon 5 since Series 9.

Synopsis[]

The Rip Rod is a real life recreation of a Hot Wheels toy car designed by Fraser Campbell that was built in collaboration by Ford, Mattel, and Bandito Brothers. It was first introduced as a show car at the 2012 SEMA tuning car show and was later made drivable using a one-liter EcoBoost engine supplied by Ford.[2]

The Rip Rod is powered by a mid-mounted 1-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder Ford EcoBoost Fox engine producing 205 hp (153 kW) and 206 ft·lb (280 N·m). It is a single-seater car, unlike most hot rods or buggies.

With a weight of 1874 lb (850 kg), the Rip Rod carries a power-to-weight ratio of 241 hp (180 kW) per tonne and, with an 8-speed sequential transmission driving the rear wheels, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.1 seconds and 0 to 100 mph (161 km/h) in 25.2 seconds. It also reaches 138 mph (222 km/h) as top speed, although this can be changed to 201 mph (323 km/h) in the Hot Wheels Expansion via the use of Speed Boosts and Loop-the-Loops.

Trivia[]

  • Despite having its first casting produced in 2014, the Rip Rod's year is shown as 2012. This matches the Rip Rod's introduction as a show car at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show.
  • The Rip Rod in the game comes with a unique green paint job, central-mounted taillights and differently-tilted twin exhaust pipes, and roof-mounted headlights that are otherwise either different from or not seen on the real life car.[3]
  • The Rip Rod is the only car introduced in the Hot Wheels Expansion without a corresponding achievement.
  • In Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Motorsport 7, there is a unique "50th Anniversary" livery with a matte black paint color, and gold and blue highlights.
  • In Forza Motorsport 7, it has 110 horsepower (82 kW) instead of 205 horsepower (153 kW), and features a single-speed CVT instead of an eight-speed gearbox.
