"Few vehicles are as distinctly Aussie as the Sandman HQ panel van. Originally, these sedan deliveries were derivatives of the typical ute with a metal or plastic shell enclosing the cargo tray. They developed into a phenomenon that escalated to its height in the 1970s before falling off in popularity. The most famous Sandman was driven by Mel Gibson in the original 1979 “Mad Max” film. Like many, Max’s panel van was converted for camping. During the climax of their popularity, Sandman panel vans were tricked out with mural paint jobs, custom windows and details that spoke to each owner’s passions. Sure, some were used for more utilitarian uses but in some cases, what went on in the backs of many of the funky Sandman HQs around the country was often more exciting than merely hauling around the tools of the trades that helped build urban Australia."—Official description[1]
The 1974 Holden Sandman HQ Panelvan - abbreviated as "Holden Sandman" - is a rear-wheel drive utility vehicle by Holden.
It appears in Forza Horizon 3 as a Barn Find and all subsequent Horizon series titles. It also appears in Forza Motorsport 7.
Performance[]
The HQ Panelvan performs similarly to its coupé counterpart, the Holden HQ Monaro GTS 350, but launches quicker off the line due to less weight on the front. Having a higher center of gravity than most C class cars, the HQ Panelvan tends to be fairly difficult to control in corners.
Upgraded[]
Both A class upgrade presets in Forza Horizon 3 swap the stock engine with a 7.0 litre V8 that produces 541 hp (403 kW) and 542 ft·lb (735 N·m) of torque. The HQ Panelvan also receives much improved handling performance. However, the rear tyres tend to be throttle sensitive, which is less of a problem for the ute variant. Other differences between both variants include a higher top speed for the van and less weight on the ute.
In Forza Horizon 3, the HQ Panelvan can be upgraded up to A class with the auto-upgrade feature. It can reach S2 class with conversion upgrades.
