"With the departure of Peter Brock, Holden needed new blood to run and build its performance vehicles division. Holden turned to British-based Tom Walkinshaw Racing and Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) was born. The Commodore Group A was a homologation special referred to by many nicknames, including “Walkinshaw” and “Walky” for its heritage, or “Plastic Fantastic” and “Winged Warrior” for the heavy use of plastic in the bold body kit. The aero kit, which some considered excessive, was functional, reducing drag by up to 25 percent. The car quickly sold the 500 models required to let the Commodore go racing and 250 more were produced to satisfy demand. The cars were produced in only one color, “Panorama Silver,” named after the famed Bathurst racing circuit at Mount Panorama. Among Australian muscle cars, the model is a head turner that has held its value over the years."—Official description[1]
The 1988 Holden VL Commodore Group A SV - abbreviated as "Holden VL Grp A" or "Holden VL '88" - is a rear-wheel drive sport sedan by Holden.
It appears in Forza Motorsport 6 as part of the Mobil 1 Car Pack and all subsequent main series titles except Forza Horizon 5.
It is featured in Forza Horizon 4 as part of the Series 25 Update.
Synopsis[]
Continuing after Holden Dealer Team's VK Commodore Group A, the VL Commodore Group A was HSV's first car. Nicknamed "Plastic Fantastic" and "Winged Warrior", the extensive plastic body kit reduced drag by up to 25%. While the engine suffered somewhat from low power output, it proved itself as an incredibly strong engine, capable of withstanding continued hard driving for extended periods of time.
Homologation for Australian Group A racing required 500 road-going units to be built, which HSV was more than happy to comply with - demand was in fact so high that an additional 250 models were produced. However, this proved to be too much - Holden dealers struggled to get the final units off the showroom floors, with several being re-converted back into more conventional looking SS models. Interestingly, the VL Commodore was available with an RB30 engine from Nissan, which was also used in the Nissan Skyline GTS-R (R31).
Today, the "Walky" is one of the most iconic Australian cars of all time. The distinct road of its heavily modified 5.0 V8 and the head-turning bodywork has made it an Australian legend.
