The “championship white” paint. The five-lug wheels. The red Honda badges. The stance and the sound. The Type R theme is often imitated, but the original limited-production Type R can’t be duplicated. Few similarly-sized hatchbacks can keep up with the Type R’s B16B motor, carrying on a Honda tradition by making an astonishing 182 horsepower naturally, through careful hand-porting of the head and increased compression. The interior is stripped of unnecessary material to bring the EK hatch down to fighting trim, and the chassis is specially seam-welded for greater rigidity. Honda specialists also threw every trick in the book at the EK9’s already phenomenal full-double-wishbone suspension, nearly eliminating understeer for perfect balance, making it nearly as fast as an Integra Type R on most road courses. The only way to truly appreciate the transformation the simple Civic went through to gain the coveted Type R badge is to hop behind the wheel and unleash it in any of Forza 4’s tracks—but the twistier, the better. Whether you appreciate the EK9 Type R in its original factory-modified form, or unleash all of your tuning and painting skills on it to transform it into the ultimate expression of your Honda fantasy, is completely up to you.
— Official description [1]

The 1997 Honda Civic Type R - abbreviated as Honda Civic '97 - is a FWD sport compact by Honda featured in Forza Motorsport 4, and all subsequent main series titles except for Forza Horizon.

Synopsis

The Civic Type R was introduced in 1997 as the third model in the Type R performance series, following the Integra Type-R and NSX-R.

It is built on a seam-welded chassis that signficantly increases rigidity and has a fully independent suspension with double wishbones at the front and rear. Due to a high number of weight reduction applications including the absence of air conditioning and elimination of sound insulation, its weight is only 2403 lb (1090 kg), making it the lightest Type R model to date.

Despite a small displacement, its B16B codenamed 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine produces 182 hp (136 kW) at 8200 rpm. A key feature of the B16B is DOHC VTEC, a variable valve lift timing system designed to increase power and overall efficiency at higher rpms.[2]

The EK9 codenamed Civic Type R was only available for the Japanese domestic market and ran production until 2000. The second generation, EP3 codenamed model debuted in 2001.[3]

Performance

The Civic Type R is one of the quickest accelerating hot hatches in the Forza series, as evident by a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time of up to 5.7 seconds and a top speed maxing out at 151 mph (243 km/h). Due to a relatively low torque output of 118 ft·lb (160 N·m) however, acceleration may be affected when driving uphill and requires optimal momentum when taking on corners.

Handling-wise, it benefits from a low weight in the form of strong steering feedback and neutral corner behavior, allowing players to avoid understeer effortlessly.

Forza Edition

The Forza Edition is an upgraded variant that was added to Forza Motorsport 7 with the May 2018 update. It comes with a primary 25% credits boost and a secondary 25% credits boost when racing at Maple Valley. Standard upgrades include a C 450 tune and widebody kit increasing its track width.

Unlock

It was rewarded to players participating in the May Spotlight Challenge – Honda Rivals event held in May 2018, but has been made purchaseable in the Buy Cars menu since the April 2019 update.
