The 1965 Lotus #1 Team Lotus Type 40 - abbreviated as "Lotus Type 40" - is a rear-wheel drive prototype race car by Lotus.
It appears in Forza Motorsport (2023) as part of the Car Pass since November 16, 2023.
Synopsis[]
The Lotus Type 40 - or simply "Lotus 40" - is a sports race car developed by Martin Wade and Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus and designed for use in sportscar racing series, such as Can Am and FIA Group 4 "Sports Car" class series. It is an evolution of the Lotus Type 30 and raced from 1965 to 1968.
Using the backbone chassis from the Lotus Elan, the Type 30 was an effective, however flawed, unreliable and dangerous vehicle, often suffering problems with torsional rigidity of the chassis, suspension failures and overheating. It was driven by drivers such as A.J. Foyt, Jim Clark and Richie Ginther.
For the 1965 season Chapman developed the Type 40, which featured a stronger chassis, front and rear spoilers, wider wheels and a bigger engine. Despite these improvements, the Type 40 was as problematic as the Type 30, being famously described by American driver Richie Ginther as "the same as a Lotus 30 but with ten more mistakes", and was no match for the V8-powered Lolas and McLarens of the time, scoring few wins in minor events.[1]
In spite of its lack of success, the chassis type proved to be effective and was later developed for use in the Lotus Europa and Lotus Esprit.[2]
Powered by a "Ford 289" 5.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, an increase over the Type 30's 4.8-liter V8 engine, and paired to a ZF 5-speed manual gearbox, the Type 40 delivered over 450 hp (336 kW) and 406 ft·lb (550 N·m) of torque.
