MG is a Chinese-owned British car manufacturer featured in Forza Motorsport 4 as part of the June Meguiar's Car Pack, in Forza Horizon 2 as part of Storm Island and as standard in all subsequent main series titles.
Synopsis[]
MG was originally shorthand for Morris Garages, having originally started as an agent for Morris cars in 1920. The company we now know as MG was founded by Cecil Kimber, a Morris sales manager, during around 1924 or so, marketing special versions of Morris cars under his name. The famous MG octagon logo would follow shortly after.
Come 1928, the company had grown sufficiently that it could warrant an identity separate from the original Morris Garages; it eventually became its own company known as the M.G. Car Company. Ownership would change hands numerous times, eventually landing under the ownership of British Leyland; by the 1970s however, the future of British Leyland and MG looked bleak. Despite MG being rather profitable, the huge losses accrued by the other British Leyland brands, particularly Austin, offset the gains made by MG entirely, with funding being transferred to the manufacture of mass market models instead.
MG's Abingdon plant was closed on 24 October 1980, a direct consequence of a program British Leyland enacted to help turn the company around after turbulence in the 1970s; the closure of said plant allegedly caused quite a stir with employees. During the 1980s, the MG marque was used as a badge-engineering scheme only, with sportier versions of British Leyland cars being given the MG marque, such as the Metro.
Ultimately, British Leyland went defunct in 1986 and became the Rover group; ownership of MG passed to British Aerospace and then to BMW. BMW sold the business again in 2000 to the MG Rover Group, which began marketing MG models alongside Rover Models. MG Rover went into receivership in 2005 and ownership passed to Nanjing Automobile, where it remains to this day. The brand was revived by Nanjing in 2011 with their first new car, the MG 6.
