"John Z. DeLorean is more famous for the later DeLorean DMC-12’s rise and fall, but one of the most successful models he helped to develop has a name that every muscle car enthusiast is familiar with: the Pontiac GTO. As an end run around corporate restrictions on engine size (A-body cars were supposed to have engines smaller than 5.4 liters), the GTO was actually an option package, although eventually it became a standalone model. With a name swiped from a Ferrari (much to the chagrin of enthusiasts of Ferrari aficionados) and an engine swiped from the full-size Pontiacs, the intermediate-sized Tempest was the basis for this proto-muscle car. By 1965, the GTO had not only become a hit with drivers of all stripes, but it was restyled as well to wear the now-familiar vertically stacked quad headlamps that most people associate with the first-generation GTO. Another change was the hoodscoop, which was purely decorative. The 6.3-liter V8 featuring Tri-Power (three two-barrel carburetors) was definitely not a decorative element, providing 360 horsepower and a stonking 424 ft-lbs. of torque. Massively successful, the “Goat” lit a fire under not only buyers and popular culture (there were more than a few songs written about the GTO), it also inspired imitators from competing manufacturers, kicking off the muscle car wars."—Official description[1]
