"In the late 1980s, Porsche continued its legacy in endurance racing with the 1987 Porsche #203 Porsche AG 961. Unfortunately, during the 1987 big race, driver Kees Nierop got into an accident in the eighteenth hour which set the car on fire. It never had the opportunity to race again, due to both the fire and lack of similar class competitors following the event. Experience an alternate history for the 961 as it races against other race cars of the era."
—Official description[1]

The 1987 Porsche #203 Porsche AG 961 - abbreviated as "#203 Porsche 961" - is a sports prototype by Porsche.

It appears in Forza Motorsport (2023) since Update 19.

Synopsis[]

The 961 is a sports prototype built by Porsche to comply with the Group B regulations. It is based on the Porsche 959 production sports car.

The 961 retained much the 959 road car, including its four-wheel drive system which was uncommon in sports prototype racing. This system was modified to distribute more power to the rear wheels rather than having a balanced distribution like the 959.

It made its competitive debut at the 1986 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it placed 7th place, 47 laps behind the winning Porsche 962C. It faced issues in future races, such as tire blowouts at Daytona International Speedway and a crash at the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans. These issues, along with the cancellation of the Group B series, caused the 961 to be cancelled. Only one car was produced.[2]

Performance[]

The 961 is powered by the same 2.8L twin-turbocharged Flat-6 as the 959 road car, tuned to produce 640 hp (477 kW) and 464 ft·lb (629 N·m). This allows the 961 to reach a top speed of 211 mph (340 km/h).[3]
