"Most folks know “Moby Dick” as the famous novel written by Herman Melville. In automotive circles, the nickname “Moby Dick” refers to just one car: Porsche’s beloved 935/78. This race car represented the peak of FIA Group 5 racing before rules changes made it obsolete. The long white tail of its Martini-liveried cousin gave it the nickname, and it remains one of the greatest beasts to ever blast down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans. The car was built specifically to compete there, even incorporating right-hand drive for better balance and sighting for the curvy clockwise course. The 935 /78 could reach speeds as high as 227 mph; enough to pass the dominant Renault Alpines and the Porsche 936. The massive turbo (along with massive lag) was known for extraordinary exhaust fireballs, but these 845 hp beasts were sadly short lived. Now’s your chance to relive those late-70s thrills again."
—Official description[1]

The 1978 Porsche 935/78 is a Group 5 race car by Porsche.

It appears in Forza Motorsport 7 as part of the Samsung QLED Car Pack and Forza Motorsport (2023) as part of Update 19.

Synopsis[]

Nicknamed "Moby Dick" by Porsche engineers due to its large body dimensions and white base paint, the 935/78 was the final model revision of the Porsche 935, a Group 5 racing model based on the 1978 Porsche 911 SC.

Designed mainly for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 935/78 could hit 226 mph (364 km/h) on the old Mulsanne straight from the Circuit de la Sarthe track, which allowed it to even outrun Group 6 prototype cars and made it the fastest car of its era.[2]

The 935/78 uses a low drag body incorporating a slant nose, long tail and wide fenders in combination with an adjustable rear wing and ride height lowered by 3.9 in (10 cm). The driver position was moved to the right, which gave the car both improved weight distribution when turning into right corners and better field of view for the driver in right-hand corners.

The twin-turbocharged 3 liter flat-six engine found in previous models was enlarged to 3.2 liters for the 935/78, pushing power to 845 hp (630 kW) and torque to 578 ft·lb (784 N·m). The engine uses four valves per cylinder operated by double overhead camshafts, which also necessitated water cooling for the cylinder heads to eliminate the risk of headgasket failure from previous models.[2]

Variants[]

The 935/78 appears in two liveries variants:
