Synopsis[]
The Triumph Motor Company was a British car and motor manufacturer active from 1885 to 1984. Originally founded by German expatriate Siegfried Bettman in 1885 as the S. Bettmann & Co. Import Export Agency, the name of the company was changed to Triumph the next year and remained as such. Initially manufacturing bicycles, the company then expanded to manufacturing motorcycles and then automobiles.
The company was subsequently acquired by Leyland Motors in 1960, which subsequently merged with British Motor Holdings (later British Leyland). To accommodate for increased production, Triumph set up a new plant in Speke to produce up to 100,000 cars per year; however, only 30,000 cars were produced at maximum as the plant was mainly used as an assembly plant. By the 1970s, British Leyland was in financial ruin, and the future of the Triumph brand, as well as all other BL brands, was uncertain. The last Triumph model, the Acclaim, essentially a rebadged Honda Ballade, was introduced in 1981. The make quietly disappeared over the summer of 1984 when the Acclaim was replaced by the Rover 200. The rights to the name have since been bought by BMW, who have since rumored a revival of the name but nothing has come of the purchase since.
