"Though it may not look as striking as some hyper cars; the 1976 Volkswagen SP-2 is still an exotic rarity worthy of a spot in your collection. Born in Brazil out of the need of locally produced race cars, the SP-2 was created by VW Brazil using the same chassis the Brazilian VW Type 3 Variant was made on and fitting a 1.7-liter air-cooled engine. Even though the car ended up heavier, its steel body provides an amazing cosmetic finish that let it stand out from other local competitors of the same category. Try a cult classic and Latin American rarity formerly named the most beautiful Volkswagen in the world with the 1976 Volkswagen SP-2."
—Official description[1]

The 1976 Volkswagen SP-2 - abbreviated as "VW SP-2 '76" - is a Brazilian-made rear-wheel drive sports car by Volkswagen.

It appears in Forza Horizon 5 as part of Series 36.

Synopsis[]

Manufactured from June 1972 to December 1975, the SP2 - an acronym for either "São Paulo" or "sports prototype" - was designed, developed and assembled by Brazil's assembly plant, Volkswagen do Brasil, at the municipality of São Bernardo do Campo.

Up to the early 1970s, Brazil's most popular sportscars were models of the then-aging Karmann Ghia, and with the rise of production and popularity of sportscars by domestic companies, such as the Puma GT, and restrictive laws that barred imports, Rudolf Leiding, one of the managers at Volkswagen do Brasil, saw a need of developing a sportscar to maintain Volkswagen's image in Brazil. Leiding then launched "Project X" in 1970, a model development that would eventually become the production SP2.

Based on the steel chassis of a Brazilian market Volkswagen Type 3, it features a long nosed, two-door hatchback coupé design, as well as two trunks, one at the front and one at the rear, and a "collision belt" made of collision-resistant front and rear bumpers capped with rubber.

Despite low sales, with 10,205 cars built and about 681 exported to other countries, and falling behind in comparison to its lighter competitor, the Puma, being jokingly referred to as "Sem Potência" - Portuguese for "without power" - the SP2 is now a rare collector's item, and in June 1973 was considered by German magazine Hobby as the "most beautiful Volkswagen in the world". It is also believed to be a conceptual predecessor to the Porsche 924.

Performance[]

Powered by a 1.7-liter air-cooled boxer flat-four engine and paired to a 4-speed manual transmission, the SP2 produces 65 hp (48 kW) and 96 ft·lb (130 N·m) of torque, making it capable of a top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h) and an acceleration time from 0 - 62 mph (100 km/h) in 17.4 seconds.[2]
