"Another air-cooled, repurposed, automotive oddity will be available to unlock this series as the final Festival Playlist Reward Car. This time, it's the German military truck transformed into outdoor explorer, the 1973 Volkswagen Thing. The birth certificate of this car states its purpose was leisure, whether you wanted to take it off roading or on your everyday drives, the Thing would deliver fun every turn of its wheels. Even though the stock version of this car is as stripped as they come, it will only take a few tweaks from your building mastermind to transform it into the off-roader of your dreams!"
—Official description[1]

The 1973 Volkswagen Thing - abbreviated as "VW Thing '73" - is a rear-wheel drive convertible off-roader by Volkswagen.

It appears in Forza Horizon 5 as part of Series 36.

Synopsis[]

Manufactured from 1963 to 1983, the Volkswagen Type 181 - marketed as "Thing" in the United States, "Kurierwagen" in West Germany, "Trekker" in the United Kingdom and "Safari" in Mexico and South America - is a four-door convertible developed by Volkswagen as a military off-roader and a civilian leisure vehicle. Over 90,000 cars were built for both military and civilian use.[2]

Originally intended for the West German Army, the Bundeswehr, the Type 181 is a low production and management cost, durable off-road-capable vehicle that shares many parts, mechanics and chassis with the Volkswagen Beetle, suspension elements of the Type 2, the floorpan of the Karmann Ghia and the concept of the Type 82 Kübelwagen, which was used by the Nazi German Army in World War II.[3]

It features removable and interchangeable doors, a fold-flat windshield and a convertible soft top or fiberglass hardtop roof. It also features reduction boxes, a form of portal axle, to attain a higher ride height and ground clearance, as well as a lower effective gearing.[4]

Powered by a rear mounted 1.6-liter air-cooled boxer-four engine and paired to a 4-speed manual transmission, the Thing produces around 44 hp (33 kW) and 72 ft·lb (98 N·m) of torque.
